The change for Starter Edition and Trial players is that they'll have access to more of the game following the update. But that doesn't require that you've completed everything through 2.55 before the maintenance starts.
Literally the biggest change for players still in ARR or playing the Starter and Trial editions is the removal of a lot of the fluff quests or quest steps that make ARR feel so frustrating to a lot of people right now.

The main wonder stems in endgame, to specify a bit, sorry.
Like, going from full 480, to full 500
that's 20 item levels, it's a fuck ton
in many mmo's, when you upgrade endgame gear, you usually get like a 1% boost in damage, for every piece of gear
in this game, +5% damage increase might not look like a lot, but every bit adds up

@lucid birch I recommend you ask a player to meld the materia for you, it can be expensive at certain levels, specially if you're melding 10 slots or more
if you have the armory buff, you could skip melds entirely as you're most likely gonna swap gear in a matter of hours

They need it melded specifically for the relic step. The first step requires that you deliver a specific weapon melded with certain materia. The Matera Melder NPC is more than sufficient for such a task.

To buy Shire Weapons, you would need to go to Hismena and buy 1 Micro Tomestone and 10 Rowena's Token (Scripture) - this will be a total of 500 Poetics. Then you take those to Bertana to trade for an item level 260 weapon. You can upgrade it to 270 by buying a Illuminati Deepest Gobdip from Hismena, and taking it and the weapon to Selka.
