I just got my chocobo and noticed it has a whole skill tree. Is this something I want to invest in or can I keep powering on regardless?

Its something you do passively while you do other stuff.
Chocobos are summoned for combat via Gysahl Greens, which you can get for 36gil each from vendors.
They stay out for 30 minutes per summon. The timer doesnt tick down if you're mounted or in a dungeon, etc.
and they gain exp from kills you make while they're out.
Its a pretty useful tool to have available, especially when you start levelling alt jobs, so its pretty reasonable to like....just keep it out all the time when you're doing other stuff, but dont go out of your way to specifically get exp for it.

Well, it's good news in your case. Many abilities which required cross-leveling are default for you. BRD is a much more solid Damage dealer as opposed to buff bot. And rotations for your Jobs got more intuitive.

That's their difficulty/aggro marker. Blue means it's passive and the more elaborate it is, the stronger the mob is for it's level.

Sight = Mob will aggro only if you're in the front 180 degrees of its vision and within range
Sound = Mob will only aggro you if you're moving faster than Walk speed
Prox = Mob will aggro regardless of anything if you're in range.
Most mobs in the open world are Sight.

so if you arent joining any specific friends then you should just join any server that has a star next to it in character creation. Those are Preferred and they give a double XP boost to all sources.
