I just unlocked squadrons, and it needs me to recruit another before I can begin. It says that challenge log will recruit more, but I just completed a couple challenges and a recuruit didn't appear. Is it a random chance? Do you have to complete all in a category?

Doing so will help more of the other friendlies survive and concentrate on the big one. Once the demon thing appears, focus on that exclusively until it's down. By then the rest of the Yellowjackets will have the boss near dead. You can then join in and finish the boss. The second part is pretty simple. Kill the gargoyle and then focus on the robe. Y'shtola will join you and keep you healed for the second part. For both parts of the fight, keep an eye on the ground and run away from orange markers.
