Preferred servers exist as an incentive to balance server populations, and they work very well for this purpose.
When a server falls slightly under (and it’s only slightly, populations are pretty balanced thanks to this system) they make it preferred and people flock to it
And by the next patch it’s usually not preferred any longer.
New players joining a preferred server is recommended. You get a 2x exp boost and there are no real drawbacks.

I haven't run potd in a while, so I'm not sure what's really advised (assuming matched party), but if I remember correctly, floors sync you to the floor number + 5 if your aetherpool is higher, so if that's still accurate, then 65/65 would ensure you're synced for the entire block.

thanks. I just got out of a raid and I didnt notice a coloration difference on my dot vs. the other PLD's dot, so I was often confused as to which was mine. I'll check again next time

then you have the option of continuing to full healer build, going to choco cure and then putting into attacker or going into attacker from choco regen
that said, the defender tree should pretty much be ignored unless you max out your chocobo (rank 20)
