Most settlements will have levemetes to hand out levequests. You can see them on the map with the card looking symbol (not the triple triad one). If you're new to that levemete, or new to levequests in general, you need to look for 
to unlock them. The first levemete available to to you is in the settlement outside your starting city.

New player question: as a dps and given that the Trust (play with npc's) system doesn't unlock till > 70ish there's no way for me to actually practice things like, say, cannons, given that when I go in new with a very experienced group, they go so blazing fast it's all I can do to get my damage in and keep sprinting and not get lost, lol. The 3d sound thing with orchestrions is a trick to deal with load limitations.
Actually loading that many tracks and freely being able to change them with a quality high enough to be non-diegetic background music was not feasible
So they use lower-quality tracks with smaller filesize, but they disguise this by having it come from an object in the 3d space

If you have the Resistance Relic, skip weapon until you have everything else
If you're planning to or are doing Savage, get your best in slot pieces first.
Higher level skills will be greyed out and will say "Action not yet learn" when you try to use them

As Fissie noted, some low level dungeon gear (pink or green quality) can be sold on the MB if you haven't equipped it.
Once you equip a piece, however, all bets are off, and your only recourse if you want to get gil out of it, is to sell it to an NPC vendor.

if you have access to a stable (either via personal/free company house or apartment), you can feed them every hour for a bit extra exp. Otherwise there's no real fast way to level chocobos other than having them out with you while you're doing stuff
