It's awesome cause you can walk into an area, and change to your highest class to help a friend, then just change back or whatever. You can be searching for a dungeon on your 70 PLD while leveling your level 10 MNK etc

That's one of the two very niche reasons you'd make an alt TBH. The other is the fact the endgame lockouts are character based rather than job based, so you can't gear more than one job at once. So people make alts to be able to gear 2 jobs at once. But it's not a common practice at all

tbh, it usually really depends on your current progression, durability, craft state and Inner Quiet stacks. There are only guidelines

@tidal yarrow If you're on the quest to go there, you can either use the Aethernet to teleport to the Airship Landing and take the airship, or speak to the lift operator either in the Bulwark or in the Drowning Wench (the tavern) to have them take you to the airship landing.
Either way, you'll need to take the airship, as the quest text should say.

To be gain access to the airship landing (and this applies in ALL major cities), you must fully attune to the Aethernet for that city.

I leveled up all of my DOL/DOH to 70 before starting other classes so that i can make my own gear, but I don't know how often I need to do it, because every 5 levels for a new set sounds like a little tedious. I know missions&dungeons give stuff out but i'd rather use my own stuff

1-50 DoW/DoM, you can mostly get away with upgrading whenever you get an upgrade from the MSQ, job quests, or a dungeon. For some pieces that will be relatively frequently. For others (especially accessories) that will be relatively infrequent.
Crafted gear while leveling is basically useless.
You'll outgrow it very quickly, and unless it's HQ, dungeon gear will quickly outstrip it.
