I run GNB at 80 and never prioritize brutal shell. No one's ever complained about it. Although I don't do savage/ex/ultimate. If I get it when doing single target, cool, otherwise it's whatever.

it'll unlock the squadron feature
you'll need to get a 4th squadron member before you can do anything with them however. Recruits are a chance from completing challenge logs
once you've gotten a 4th member, you can then send out your squadron on missions

Yoshi P has stated many times he wants players to enjoy their time here and encourages players to take breaks etc. There are content lulls but you'll have plenty to do until you finish MSQ etc. MSQ can drag on sometimes so it wouldnt be a bad idea to swap to the other mmo during that time or whatnot. I limit one mmo to 2 days a week and currently in a lull for xiv.

I am new to this game starting out I picked GLA and have recently hit 30 and gotten PLD, while leveling and doing MSQs I have begun to feel like it takes me forever just to kill simple mobs. Would it be faster if I switched to a DPS focused class or should I just tough it out and stay tank.

Your ilevel under level 50 will tend to the lower end, as accessories in particular can be difficult to obtain, and will therefore tend to drag your ilevel down.

I don't use Gil to craft (other than odd stuff like glues or low.level mats) I gather industrial amounts, make what I need and MB or gift away the rest

even then i would still use scrip gear even if you're not using gil to craft
not to mention that if you're doing restoration for leveling, they don't have that high of stat requirements anyway
