Free trial accounts have severely restricted social options but you can meet up and play together yup.
You have to get a non-trial player to create a party and invite both of your characters to queue for dungeons together but thats about it.
You can also buy the game after you hit lvl 35 and your character will continue from there.

In regards to crystarium gear. I was told by my FC that main stat absolutely trumps any crit or anything like that so body and legs are first on the list no matter if it messes around my stats (like getting body has given me 1400 SkS on SAM which is overboard but gave me about 40 strength)

@faint flint A lot. Jobs were largely reworked, some QoL stuff was added, and of course there's an entire expansion-worth of new content.

I remember picking up the new exp but kinda fell out of playing before launch, would you recommend popping back in on leveled characters or running new ones?

Either or. They haven't made the changes to the ARR MSQ that will make it somewhat less grindy yet (those changes are slated for the now-delayed 5.3), so leveling a new character would only be beneficial if you wanted to go back through the whole story.
However with the addition of the New Game+ system (which allows you to replay most of the previous MSQ, as well as the Alliance Raid and some of the other side content storylines), you can go back and do that instead if you wanted to remind yourself what was happening.
Picking up on an existing character, the biggest thing I'd recommend would be redoing your bars before anything else. Every job had changes made to their abilities to some extent, so looking through to see what was removed or changed would be highly beneficial.

you get 7k exp per instead of 700 per

When I'm starting a new class, once I reach level 30 and get to the job unlock, I'll sit in town, clear all of my bars, then go through my entire spellbook one ability at a time and place everything (even the skills I haven't learned yet) on my bars in combo or effect groupings.

There are thousands of set ups, and at the end of the day, you just gotta do what's comfortable for you and while it might be helpful to do something like put skills on your bar one at a time based on level
realistically your rotation @ level 80 is going to use them all but how OFTEN you use it is going to affect where you place stuff
IE: for melee dps all my aoes are shift + 5,6,7
cause it literally never gets used in savage raids
barring a few niche fights
but if you spam dungeons, it might be helpful to have them in a more convenient location
