'When can I get my first mount?'

The quest that allows you to use mounts, 'My Little Chocobo' is unlocked by completing the level 20 main story quest 'The Company You Keep'. The quest is located at the Grand Company base you chose and you'll need to buy the Chocobo Issuance from your Grand Company Quartermaster. You can get the 200 needed Grand Company seals by doing the main story quest that comes after 'The Company You Keep'.

'Are there any differences between mounts?'

Besides looks, all mounts are the same speed along with being able to fly in the expansion zones. Some mounts allow multiple people to ride at once.

'Can I make my mount faster?'

Zones have one or two ranks of mount speed that increase the ground speed of mounts. The first rank comes from completing specific quests in the main scenario quests, with the second rank coming from Riding Maps which are bought with either Allied Seals, Centurio Seals, or Bicolor Gemstones. Mount Speed Boosts do not increase the flying speed of mounts.

How do I get Grand Company Seals?

You can get more seals mainly by completing your Grand Company Hunting Log (Go to the Hunting Log and click on the GC icon), completing FATEs, and turning in crafted/gathered items to the Personnel Officer if you have crafting or gathering classes unlocked. Once you are Sergeant 2nd Class you can turn in Pink/Green/Blue-rarity gear in for more seals.

So I've been playing AST for two or three days. I'm up to level 52. My main is WHM. I definitely want to stick to support roles, but my concern is that AST is completely unmanageable in meta. For example, running E5 through 8 savage seems crazy to me, as a WHM I already find it pretty challenging. I do like the buffing aspect of AST but when I try to find a 5.2 job guide for AST all I find are memes. Can someone give me some perspective on what end game AST feels like, especially in savage raids?

'Why does my EXP bar have some blue in it?'

That's Rested experience, which is an extra source of bonus experience shared between all of your classes. You gradually earn this while inside a sanctuary (town or area with a major aetheryte), regardless of whether you're online or not. Sanctuaries are also indicated with a crescent moon icon near your experience bar.

'How much of a boost is it?'

The most amount of rested experience you can have at once is one and a half levels of experience. That means that lower level jobs use up the rested experience faster than higher level jobs do.

Do note that you shouldn't try to use Ironworks/Shire/Scaevan gear for the entire 10 levels past when you can equip them.

For Ironworks/Shire in particular, the level 54/64 crafted gear and level 55/65 dungeon gear has a lot more defense stats which greatly helps with staying alive.

I really only recommend paying for more if you hoard crafting materials, lots of glamour items, and/or lots of housing items

or if you really want to maximize your marketboard selling.

Also if you want to make the most out of your retainers by having them get a bunch of monster/gathering materials

each extra retainer past the free 2 are $2.50 per month and you can get a maximum of 10 total retainers.

then do eden 5-8 for 480 gear, resistance quest for 485 weapon

can also do memoria ex for 480 gear that is not weekly capped.

then do savage for 490/500 gear

you can also skip straight to 480 by buying it on the marketboard

How can I get my gear melded?

If you only need melds for visible Materia slots, then any NPC melder in any major city marketplace will do. They're marked on the map with a Blue Materia icon. If you want to Advance meld your crafted gear, then you'll need to request another player to meld your gear or to do it yourself.

Why can't I meld this Materia to my stuff?

Every Tier of Materia has a minimum item level requirement that gear must meet to allow melding of that Tier. Tier 6 Materia requires an item level of 290 while Tiers 7 and 8 require an item level of 420.

Why is my meld giving +0 stats?

Every item has a maximum amount of stats that can be given through melding and the natural stats found on the gear. This can be seen at the bottom of the Materia Melding menu, as seen in the picture below.

As a rule of thumb, the secondary stat with a higher number is already at the cap and cannot be further melded.

and yeah, leves and ishgard restoration are pretty equal

For a tank alt, the fastest way to level up is just my highest level dungeon right? Instead of Palace if the dead

nothing prevents you from doing PoTD, but usually the tanks dungeon ques are fast enough. PotD is optimal for dps jobs with slow ques cause it doesnt respect the 1 tank/heal 2 dps of dungeons

and dungeons often give more exp in the timeframe
