Ok so I'm sorry if people have asked this kinda thing before but I'm having some severe problems even installing ff14 atm, I have purchased a base 30 days subscription but I just cannot seem to get the patcher to pass a certain threshold without getting a specific error.
If anyone wouldn't mind going through this issue with me I would certainly appreciate the help as this is a rather trying issue to handle, I would really like to give this game an honest try.
TLDR I have a problem getting the Patcher to work and as such cannot start playing full stop.

I have a general question about the crafting and gathering for beginners. is it recommended to start any of them, or should you run through your first class/job , finish the story, and then go back and do some of the crafting and gathering?

I generally recommend to wait to level crafters until you're max lvl and done with the msq
since that gives you a decent gil base, and its easier to level them up since you'll likely have a lot of things unlocked or an easier time unlocking them when youre max

There's a cap on how much your retainer can bring back. 30 is the max for most gathered items, other things like timed node materials are much lower. Max lvl also reduces the duration to 40mins for ventures that are 24 lvls or more below
