and I don't understand... gear, and multiplayer I guess
I've been able to breeze through the main quest using gear given to you through the quests

when you get to cap, there's a mixture of max ilvl gear to shoot for--gear from weekly locked tomestones (currently phantasmagoria) which you can upgrade, or gear from savage raiding. There's some other sort of in-progress sets to work towards and whatnot along the way
with 5.2 coming this tuesday we have a new raid tier, which means a new entry level crafted set, normal mode raiding gear, and new tomestone/savage gear to work towards

so sometimes the direction you get knocked back (if you can't surecast/arm's length it) can matter

generally through enmity/damage done/enemies tagged and killed/turnins done
so like, if you complete a FATE solo for example, you'll get full credit even if you barely beat the FATE timer, for example. But if you only tag a single mob and the FATE gets killed very quickly without you, you'll get minimum credit for it
you also share credit in a party as well (as long as you give some base contribution to a given FATE as well), so being in a party for FATEs can be very useful

yes, the slight exception is the SDS fenrir from the mogstation which automatically comes with the first tier of movement speed

@thick bolt basically all stats are normalized across the board, you must use PvP actions which deal the same HP damage as the potency stated in the tooltips, role actions have no meaning, and some other stuff
I recommend wacking one of the PvP dummies until you understand how to play the PvP version of your job

Also, I've got two questions for SMN.
- In trials and boss fights, where people may actually die, is it wise to use swiftcast? I don't do endgame yet, and feel like taking 2400 mana off the healers' shoulders is worth the slightly less dps.
- I've played SCH before and used the default strategy of parking fairy on top of the boss and Heeling it if the fight went too far for it to effectively contribute. Should I do the same with my carbies?

Healers (except for AST) have many more resources for restoring or conserving their own MP, so MP draining isn't a huge concern if they know what they're doing.
For endgame, the shield from Topaz isn't going to do a whole lot to keep you from dying because you miss a mechanic. You're better off sticking to your Ifrit and Garuda, imo

SMN filler GCD are actually a bit weak, compared to healer filler GCD
so replacing a ruin 3 with a swift raise is going to be better than a healer having to replace one of their filler GCD with a swift raise
SMN generally should have a bit higher priority in raise over a healer, even if both healers are alive
