is creating a portrait image of a character standing straight up and then outpainting the sides the best way to get a landscape image?

it seems like most of the time it tries to fill the image with the character which leads to not being able to get a landscape image where the background has as much focus as the character

outpainting is tough... I've found it easiest to generate in wide when possible, at smaller sizes, and upscale

other options are to generate the character and background separately

It’s usually easier/better to just generate it in the landscape format and use prompting to get the distance properly

Something like cowboy shot or medium shot or similar

Look up photography framing terms, most work unless the model is overly trained on closeups

The next best option is to generate the character with a solid background, then cut them out and paste on a landscape background image, then pass that through img2img to clean it up

But outpainting might work too, just depends on the time vs results

I almost never specify a prompt at all for adetailer which means that it uses the same prompt as the image. If you are specifying a prompt, that could explain the loss of the LoRA's style since it wouldn't apply the LoRA to the adetailer pass unless you add it to that prompt as well.

i expanded the image in paint.net and slapped it into the inpainting tab and masked the expanded area but it keeps just generating random crap in the masked area and not taking the unmasked area into account

I haven't really tried outpaining on XL. You could try drawing some basic blobs in the appropriate colors where you want things to be in paint.net after you expand the image and then inpaint over that.

what i'm trying to do right now is create funny outpaints of my friends in wacky scenarios to send them using screenshots from their webcams

only masked means that it will crop the image down to only the masked area + the number of padding pixels that you select in the slider next to it, upscale that (if necessary) to match the largest dimension of masked area to the corresponding dimension of the resolution you selected, inpaint the masked area, then downscale and stitch it back into the original image.

It's used for adding detail to small areas of the image and is exactly what adetailer is doing.

yeah probably. xl really doesn't like resolutions that aren't very close to 1mp. for hires fix it works to go higher because you're using low denoising and already have the shapes defined.

I agree with Smol Sus. It's definitely better than 1.5 was without hires fix, simply because the base resolution is higher, but it does benefit from a hires pass still. I find that 1.5x upscaling is usually plenty for SDXL hires fix.
