i was surprised that the shape for this task was uncoloured ... the initial one which was before it was yellow, so it seemed against the usual game rhythm to get rid of all the yellow stuff

It's asking for a white shape, not an uncoloured shape.

The easiest way to tell what's wrong when this happens is to click on the requested shape, read the shape code, click on a part on the belt, and compare the shape code to see what's different.
