#[SPZ2-5064][0.1.1] DX12 Renderer: Game hangs when monitor is turned off and back on during gameplay

Thanks for the bug report ๐
I created an internal bug report to further investigate this issue.
Possible Workaround:
Changing from Full Screen to Borderless should stop doing that from happening
Also note that Directx 12 is experimental, and Directx11 should give better performance for Shapez2
[SPZ2-5064][0.1.1] DX12 Renderer: Game hangs when monitor is turned off and back on during gameplay
Unfortunately, I can't agree with that. I have significantly worse performance with DX11 than with DX12. Vulkan is a bit better for me than DX12.
Weird. I wonder why that is.
Maybe it's because my factory now has over 1.2 million buildings and is running into other bottlenecks like @tough dove
Oh. Yeah that is a lot.
and it's not the end
Is it a MAM?
i have 2 MAMs. One of them is already built on all 3 platform levels and the other is still being built on 3 levels.
Impressive. I haven't made one yet ๐
Well thats not true. The first attempt would work as long as there was always 4 quarters. Any less and it didnt work.
And it didn't paint and wasn't multilayered
So...haven't made one on your level I guess is what I meant
I use multiple platform layers just to increase the output, since levels 70 and 82 of the random shapes already require quite a lot of material and I would like to bring them to the vortex with just one move so that the MAM can then work directly on the next shape.
And if I split the output across more wagons, it takes longer. Hence the additional levels.
Maybe this will help a little with your problem.
Makes sense, though I would probably have some performance cap that I would put onto myself, where I would stop adding stuff, then go for efficiency if that helps.
I got someones save a few weeks ago to test and it was doing 3fps. That to me is unplayable.
Damn, you make it look so simple ๐
Though that is basically the end of the process. My last attempt was all about the controller more than the output.
like this?
I don't know your system configuration, of course, but I have a PC that should have some backups.
You said you got a few saves to test? I bet mine was there from another post under #1033433263861137521
Mine was a lot more messy but yeah something like that ๐
I can't even remember what the testing was for, but 3 fps eliminated that save from being useful.
This is a larger controller that also controls the crystallizers.
At the time of the report, my save only had about 800,000 buildings. The same save on my PC has now 1.38 million buildings. but with 20 fps
How does 20fps feel?
You can play at around 20 fps, but it's starting to get a bit uncomfortable. 30 fps was still manageable, but 20 fps is a completely different definition of slideshow. If I were playing DX11, I could probably expect around 10 fps.
For the sake of completeness, here are some PC stats. But, strangely enough, with higher fps in the menus.
My old computer's GPU fans would start rattling if I didn't limit the fps, in the end I realised I didn't really notice 30fps.
And you certainly don't want to save this game either. Because then everything will be just fine. 0 fps until the save is complete.
Yeah. I know how that feels ๐
Kerbal Space Program that I used to play did the same thing.
Do you also have to wait about 7-8 seconds for the save to do its job? ๐
Not that long, but noticeable ๐
You said you had a save that only gave you 3 FPS. What hardware do you have, and can I possibly take a look at that save?
They gave me a save privately so I wouldn't be comfortable with that.
Computer was:
i9 9900K
3070ti
32 GB of ram
Well...I found that within a day of playing the Dimension update when it was an experimental build (before I got employed)
Well, that's a shame. It would certainly have been interesting to see if I could achieve 5 or more FPS, but I don't want to pressure you into anything.
I would say you follow better rules of changing levels to have avoided seeing that until now.
That makes me jealous. I certainly wouldn't say no to a job at topspr games.
I picked up the following yesterday:
7800X3D
RTX5070
32 GB of ram
Are there rules for this? I simply let my peculiarities take over, which almost out of habit require me to stay on Level 1 unless otherwise necessary.
I worked on a game called KSP2. There was someone who could make two planets merge together because they pressed the different keys too quickly.
A lot of people didn't have the problem because they would wait for the game to change before pressing another key.
So in that case the rule was to wait a moment before pressing keys.
So in your case your possible subconscious rule avoided seeing that under the vortex until now ๐
Sometimes I also have moments where I find bugs that shouldn't be there, even if they're not necessarily as big as merging two planets.
That's why I find things like this.
I think it's because you are far from the vortex.
I think trash does something similar
this is around 70 chunks away from the vortex
There's some old bug reports on this discord showing some really wonky foundations which I think are the same cause but fixed.
70 chunks? That's 70 full grids away? I am surprised it only looks that bad.
I only noticed this when I found the exact shapes I wanted far away, without having to send them through the tedious process of factory-building. On top of that, the controls there were incredibly imprecise.
this are only 100 Chunks away. And yes full grids
200 chunks and things get really crazy.
Never seen that ๐ I guess I stay closer to home.
Oh. I just saw the black particles on the left. I have seen them before, but not the grids being like that at the same time.
I discovered this by chance, and I was only about 40 chunks away from the vortex. I didn't actively search for it after that.
At first, I thought it was another PC issue, but it stayed exactly as it was. So it was something internal to the game. It's probably related to the accuracy of the float calculation or something, but I don't know enough about the game for that.
Since Gamescom this year, at the latest, I know 100% that this is a device-independent problem. It occurred on the devices at Gamescom just as it did on my PC.
I bet if I had pushed the performance, I could have easily reduced the FPS on those devices as well.
Floating point precision problems I think is the main cause, but I am not 100% sure. It manifests in different ways.
I use the default screen to determine performance, for me Vulkan has the best performance followed by DX11 (M1 pro metal was the worst performer)
So you were trying DX12 to see if there was an improvement?
yes
I was running on a 5700XT
So you have a lot going on as well like Chaos?
No, just that I get a bit more FPS out of vulkan
Currently it does 60 ish at 4K widescreen, vulkan gives me a few more fps
Nice. 60fps seems perfectly fine for Shapez2.
In my experience anyway.
Iโd almost say Iโm one of the few who really have to overdo it.
I get the impression anyone who is making MAMs are one of the few, so more than you probably think.
I was thinking more about the number of buildings
But I bet there are people who have significantly more buildings than I do.
One you supplied to a bug report has a total of 324,891 buildings. Completely manageable.
only ~325000 buildings? Then the save is practically empty.
haha yes ๐
As I mentioned there, I can provide a newer version with more buildings if needed.
Aside from that, thereโs also a significantly smaller save included, which already experiences FPS drops when viewed up close at the vortex.
I didn't realise it was you that submitted that bug report. I have added comments/invitation to add the bigger save to it.
the newer version is uploaded
have fun loading the save ๐คช
Now you can take a look at the MAM and learn how it works. ๐ ๐
And spoil it for myself? No ๐
I am just pointing out one possibility.
Which eventually I might consider if I can't figure out what I am doing.
Maybe someday I'll sit down with the MAM again and work on making it smaller and thus need fewer buildings.
If that is possible ๐
Yes, it is. Someone has already built a MAM that small. Even I don't fully understand its construction.
