#0.0.8-rc3 - Crash on Startup (even though it worked just fine before!)

Posted this on the Steam forums, but I figure I'll add it here just to be safe.

I just bought this game and I am so excited to play it!

I played it for about 30min after installing (so I know my computer can run it!), then I had to leave for an appointment. Closed as normal.

Came back from my appointment to play more, and now the game does this when I launch it:

  • Shows the opening credits.
  • Shows the loading bar across the title screen.
  • When the bar fills, I hear a pop sound effect.
  • The fullscreen game disappears and I get a smaller window with the game's circular logo and a red "!" on it, with a blue progress bar underneath. (see photo)
  • The blue progress bar fills.
  • The game stops running.

Things I have tried and that did not help:

  • Rebooting the game
  • Verifying the files
  • Rebooting Steam
  • Rebooting my entire PC
  • Reinstalling the game

Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you!

Have you followed the steps in #🔍troubleshooting?

There were no steps that applied.

I thought they'd migrated the steps over there, guess not. Have you looked in #windows-specific?

Oh, that looks like my problem! I’ll give it a try when I’m home. Thank you!

Seems similar (but might not be exactly the same) as #1281084139118006304 . Do you happen to have an Intel GPU?

desert quartz
#

I do, yes.

There is no fix listed for that module that I can find on the linked page.

Sounds like a driver thing then, can you try one of the other launch options?

Am trying it now with Direct 12, and that at least let me get to the main menu! But… it froze when I clicked “continue”.

#

My computer is old. I should mention that. And also a laptop. But it meets the minimum spec requirements, and literally ran the game no problem for 30 minutes this morning.

#

Oh that froze my computer so bad, I had to manually hold down the power button to turn it off.

Update: launching with Vulkan didn't get me far either.

#

I'm beginning to think I should get a refund.

#

I have spent over half of my logged playtime trying to troubleshoot this.

My device specs, fwiw

@desert quartz did you update your graphics driver ?

desert quartz
#

Yes, I am up to date.

Should I refund at this point?

Here's my log from the last time I tried to run the game. I ran it in DX12, managed to start a new file, but it froze before I could finish the tutorial, or like... click on literally anything.

#

And here's my log from trying to run it in the normal launcher.

#

Full crash report.

@soft brook I am still having an issue.

I believe this is a known issue with a lot of intel gpus/integrated graphics, for some reason they can run the game for a bit and then end up crashing after a while. I've had the same issue on my laptop for months and haven't been able to fix it. iirc the devs are working on a fix for it, but there are no promises as of yet

#

it really sucks because it feels like it should work, it just.. doesn't

#

if I were you I would hold out hope and occasionally check for updates/fixes for the problem, but refunding (at least for now) is a pretty valid option
