#[0.0.8-RC3] MacOS - Stuttering/Crashing When Zoomed Out

I've just started on Milestone 5, so have relatively few buildings, but when I zoom out any significant amount (usually to the point where the "1/A" view option appears on the lower right) the game begins to flicker and stutter. Not just a low framerate, but rapidly switching between a zoomed-in and zoomed-out frame. When opening the Esc menu, it flickers between the zoomed-out frame and menu frame. The issue is solved when exiting to the main menu or restarting the game, but sometimes I have to force quit so the pause menu isn't accessible. Sometimes the issue is just a black frame stuttering over the most recent game frame.

Persists in Fullscreen/Borderless/Windowed

Most recent player log is attached. Video also attached, but back-forth stuttering doesn't show in this video, just the black-frame stuttering.

Specs:
Intel Core i5-1030 1.10GHz Quad Core
8 GB RAM
Intel Iris Plus Graphics 1536 MB VRAM
Mac OS 13.4.1

Hi, have you checked to see whether the process is running under Intel or Apple architecture? There's a known issue with Steam where it launches the application under Intel and Rosetta emulation by default.

#

Ah actually sorry just noticed your intel iris graphics there, what model of mac is it?

I've got it running on a 2020 Macbook air 9,1

hmmmm, sounds like it's the intel graphics struggling. Does the issue still happen if you set your graphics in-game to the lowest settings possible?

hybrid belfry
#

It does yeah

vocal python
#

Yeah, I think they're still working out the specs required for mac, but it might just be that the intel graphics aren't able to handle some of the shaders currently

Is there any way to launch using Vulkan or some other alternate settings on mac?

I have similar problem. When zoomed out and** early into Milestone 5 setting up to first painting** (OP was at that point also). Running my first pipe of paint towards another platform and zoomed for a broader view for routing, screen froze, music continued, beachball spin, returned to the game cursor that is non-responsive, back to beachball spin and no response to any input. I am on an old Macbook Air (2017, 13 inch, 2.2 Mhz dual core Intel i7, Intel HD Graphics 6000), OS 12.7.5 running on ultra low graphics quality.

# fervent herald i have the same issue on a maxed out M3 MAX

huh that's weird cos I'm on a M1 Pro MBP and not having the same issue, have you checked that Steam isn't launching your game under Intel and it's being run through Rosetta? That's been an isssue people have found with Steam, there's another post here somewhere about the solution for it.

i cant find the post

thank you

vocal python
#

it's under questions > running on an arm mac

#

it made all the difference to my performance

fervent herald
#

youre a lifesaver

#

i used to get 3fps

vocal python
#

16 cores and 131GB of RAM?!

#

Oh neptune

fervent herald
#

lol

#

40gpu cores

vocal python
#

Well, I've already told my boss I expect an M4 when they drop, so I'm going shopping

fervent herald
#

and only 61fps 😦

#

yea

#

its like its capped

tbf I think some of the menu sections are limited, you might want to look into enabling the metal performance HUD, and you can see what Metal reckons it's up to cos I've been hitting close to 90 in some places

fervent herald
#

just bounces off 60

#

ok

#

F

#

i thouight it look way too choppy for 60

#

using 10% of gpu now

vocal python
#

huh, that is weird, in an area with lots of machines & belts?

fervent herald
#

yea

#

563k buildings

vocal python
#

ah yeah, I think in a different perf thread they mentioned they're aware the game tops out somewhere around the 450k building mark atm

#

the simulation itself is single threaded I think they said, and I imagine your GPU is being under utilised or just the game doesn't need that much power GPU wise and you're running into the limits of the perf for the simulation

fervent herald
#

ahhhh i see

The #1280310799956705300 thread has some info
