Technical limitations
Game design
The inter-floor connections are a lot more separated in code than the intra-floor connections, but changing that is on the whiteboard for future changes
Painters are early and are supposed to be a lot easier to work with, that's also why they're four to a belt instead of the six for crystalizers
Leaning more towards game design. More than possible to make things fully 3d but most players struggle with a third rotation button
Plus it's a lot of extra models for all the possible situations, plus extra code to pull off. So the trade offs are you make a few people happy and the rest grumble about not being able to understand it
It's still possible (though quite challenging) to fit 12 belts worth of crystalizers on a 1x2
