This is not the case for the square ones, so I assume it's a bug either way.

Or is it some homage to older versions of the game?

I am pretty sure this was reported before but I cannot find it right now.
It is probably low priority and as you say at this point almost like a homage to the 2 miner Hub early on.
Will get looked at eventually.
